Process for the preparation of orthoformic ester

To prepare o-formic ester, chloroform and alkali metal alcoholate are reacted batchwise isothermally in a temperature range of 30 to 120 DEG C under pressures from 1 to 6 bar at a pH of > 7, one of the two components being introduced first and the other component being metered in in such a way that a final total molar ratio of 1:3 to 2:3 is obtained. It is preferred to introduce an alcoholic alkali metal alcoholate solution first and to meter in chloroform at a constant reaction temperature.
