PURPOSE:To control the level of a sintering zone and to execute stable sintering by igniting the raw material layer in a vertical type sintering machine to form the sintering zone while lowering the raw material layer, detecting the level of said sintering zone with a sensor and controlling the crushing speed of sintered cake. CONSTITUTION:Powder sintering raw materials 2 are charged into the vertical sintering machine body 1 to form the raw material layer 5. The raw material layer 5 is continuously lowered and the prescribed position thereof is ignited by an ignition device 6 to form the sintering zone 7. Air for combustion introduced from an air pipe 20 is supplied into the sintering zone 7 and an exhaust gas is discharged from a fire grate 18 to continuously sinter the raw material layer 5. The sintered cake 8 obtd. in such a manner is crushed by a crushing device 4, by which a product 13 is obtd. The level of the sintering zone 7 of the above-mentioned method is detected by the sensor 23 and the crushing device 4 is controlled with a driving device 10 by a control device 22. The descending speed of the raw material layer 5 is thereby controlled in such a manner that the level of the sintering zone 7 is positioned within the prescribed range.
