With the aid of an apparatus (9), a protective guard-rail can be attached beyond a building opening. The apparatus (9) has a fastening device (10) which can be fastened on a building part or the like - usually a wall - which borders the building opening laterally. The fastening device (10) exhibits a retaining device (14) for a post (15) which stands vertically upright on an underlying surface in the use position. Said post can be rotated or shifted about its longitudinal axis. The post (15) is, furthermore, non-releasably connected to the retaining device (14) and, on either side of the retaining device (14), exhibits in each case at least one securing means (18, 19) for a guard-rail board. Instead of the non-releasable post (15) there may also be provided a releasable and reversible post which, at least on one side of the retaining device, has at least one securing means for a guard-rail board. <IMAGE>
