A process is specified with which the leading end of a material web can be attached, by means of a beaded adhesive tape, automatically and without interrupting operations, to the trailing end region of an expiring, rapidly moving material web. The end section, disposed behind the splice point, of the expiring material web is, in this process, severed off automatically directly behind the splice point. The design of the beaded adhesive tape used and the device for carrying out the process are also described.
