The automatic silo water power station consists of a recirculating mechanism resembling an elevator, which is installed in a water silo and on whose recirculating roller chains or the like horizontally situated cylinders are mounted at regular intervals. Located in each cylinder is a movable piston which divides the cylinder into an air space located at the front and an open water space situated behind the piston. A strong spring of appropriate length is accommodated in the air space. This spring can be biased by means of a cable line, driven by an electric motor, or the like by pulling the piston to the cylinder head. In this state, the air space is at its smallest and the displacement of water at its slightest. This state is brought about in each case at the upper turning point. The cylinder is thus guided downwards with the slightest water displacement. At the lower turning point, the spring is detensioned and then presses the piston outwards, resulting in the formation of an additional air space. The cylinder thereby starts to rise, and as rising proceeds the water pressure on the piston is continuously reduced, with the result that the piston can slide further outwards and enlarge the air space. The spring is then detensioned again at the upper turning point and can be biased again. As the air space is enlarged, there is also an increase in the flotation energy, since the empty weights of the rising and falling cylinders neutralise one another. The flotation energy can...
