PURPOSE:To reduce the occurrence of erosion due to molten slug and to improve durability, by a method wherein a melting furnace is formed of refractories containing a specified ratio of Cr2O3. CONSTITUTION:A melting furnace is formed of refractories containing 20-80wt% Cr2O3. Resistance to erosion of the refractories improves with the increase in a Cr2O3 content, and if a Cr2O3 content is too high, resistance to spoiling decreases, and since a construction cost of the melting furnace also increases, it is suitable that an upper limit is set to 80%. Though an effect is produced with a lower limit of 20% and up, even if a content is 25%, micro- erosion occurs after the use for 1,500hr. Therefore, in consideration of yearly continuous operation of 8,000hr, it is desirable that the Cr2O3 content is 35% or more. It is preferable that MgO, Al2O3, SiO2, ZrO2, etc. is contained as other component than Cr2O3.
