In a method of disposing of waste, in particular domestic refuse, in which the waste is separated into at least two fractions and a fraction thus produced with a high calorific value is incinerated, it is proposed to separate the waste in such a manner that the fraction with a high calorific value assumes a gross calorific value between 2400 and 4300 kcal/kg, in particular between 2600 and 3100 kcal/kg, and this fraction is incinerated at at least 1100 DEG C, preferably at at least 1200 DEG C. As a result the refuse quantity to be incinerated is maximised and an environment-considerate waste incineration of high energy efficiency is achieved. The waste incineration is preferably carried out in free flight or in a rotary furnace.
