NEW MATERIAL:An optically active compound expressed by the formula (R<1> and R<2> are 2-16C alkyl; n is 0 or 1). EXAMPLE:Optically active 4''-[1-(n-hexyloxycarbonyl)ethyloxy]phenyl 4'-n- hexyloxybiphenyl-4-carboxylate. USE:A chemically stable liquid crystal material having a wide liquid crystal temperature range and improved compatibility with another liquid crystal material. PREPARATION:An acid chloride of 4-n-alkyloxybiphenyl-4'-carboxylic acid and an n-alkyl 2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)propionate are subjected to esterification reaction to afford the aimed compound expressed by the formula.
