It is a compound useful for the control of liquid crystal state and exhibiting excellent electrical field response by introducing a group having large dipole moment to the asymmetric C. When an extremely small amount of the compound is added to a nematic liquid crystal composition for twisted nematic display element, the generation of striped pattern on the display face can be prevented and the uniformity of the display can be improved. PREPARATION:A compound of formula I wherein n is 1 can be produced by esterifying an optically active 2-fluoro-1-alkanol of formula II with a p- substituted benzoic acid or p-substituted biphenylcarboxylic acid.
