A fingerprint scanning device includes a finger contact surface (40) and two reflective surfaces (31, 32). Each of the surfaces (31, 32, 40) forms a partial cylinder of elliptical cross section, having each two focal axes (10, 45; 50, 60; 45, 50). The focal axes of the first reflective surface (31) coincides with a linear light source (10) and one focal axis (45) of the finger contact surface (40) the focal axes of the second reflective surface (32) coincides with the other focal axis (50) of the finger contact surface (40) and a linear array (60) of photosensitive elements and charged coupled devices. The linear light source (10) resides within a scanning drum (15) having a longitudinal opening or slit (20) and being suitably rotated to project a line of light along the first reflective surface (31) whereby light rays are reflected in turn to the finger contact surface (40), to scan a finger held thereon, to the second reflective surface (32) and then finally to the linear array (60). |
