<p>A mechanism is described for driving a cam in such a manner that a variable oscillation is superimposed on the rotation of the cam in order to vary the period during which an associated valve is opened. …<??>The mechanism comprises a gear or sprocket (16) rotatable in synchronism with the engine crankshaft and journalled in a block (18a, 18b) which is displaceable transversely to the axis of the cam (12).
