SILVER HALIDE PHOTOGRAPHIC SENSITIVE MATERIAL HAVING SUPERIOR GRADATION CHARACTERISTIC AT TOE OF CHARACTERISTIC CURVE

PURPOSE:To improve the gradation characteristics of a silver halide photographic sensitive material at the toe without exerting unfavorable influence on the photographic performance such as the sensitivity or fog by using a silver halide emulsion contg. a specified magenta coupler for forming a dye and a water soluble silver salt added after the end of chemical aging. CONSTITUTION:A water soluble silver salt which is dissolved in water at 25 deg.C by >=1g/l, preferably >=3g/l is added to a silver halide emulsion at an arbitrary time between the end of chemical aging and the beginning of coating on a support. The silver salt is added in combination with a dye forming coupler, preferably a magenta coupler represented by formula I. When the resulting silver halide emulsion is used, the gradation of a silver halide photographic sensitive material at the toe is improved without exerting unfavorable influence on the photographic performance and the fog is also reduced. In the formula, Z is a group of nonmetallic atoms required to form a heterocyclic ring contg. N, X is H or a substituent eliminable by a reaction with the oxidized product of a color developing agent and R is H or a substituent.
