PURPOSE:To reproduce a picture of good quality and having the minimum width in the noise bar of a reproducing signal at high speed by providing a measuring means of plural periods and a means for operating and setting a prescribed level so as to make the plural periods equal. CONSTITUTION:The measuring means of the plural periods constituted of a microcomputer 20 and a comparator 6 measures the plural periods by the level of the envelope detecting signal of the reproducing signal obtained through magnetic heads 2a, 2b. The level setting means constituted of the microcomputer 20 and a D/A converter 30 operates and sets the prescribed level so as to make said plural periods equal. The scale relation of the envelope detecting signal level of the reproducing signal and the prescribed level is detected, an optimum comparison potential is supplied to the comparator 6 and the writing range to a field memory 8 can be automatically operated. Accordingly, even in a tape recorded with any recording track width, the picture of the good quality and having the minimum width in the noise bar can be reproduced at high speed.
