PURPOSE:To obtain a thin polarizing film which produce polarizing performance and has high transparency and stability by expanding a solution obtained by mixing a material which has dichroic polarizing performance with a specific organic compound over the surface of pure water or a solution and thus forming a compound monomolelcular film, and dislocating it to a substrate. CONSTITUTION:The solution obtained by mixing the material 3 which has the dichroic polarizing performance with the organic compound 2 which has a >=8 carbon number alkyl group or carboxyl group in a molecule is expanded over the surface of the pure water or solution 1 to form the compound molnomolecular film 8, and the substrate where the polarizing film is to be formed is brought into contact with this system to dislocate at least one layer of the compound monomolecular film. Consequently, the polarizing film which has extremely small capacity and high transparency and is extremely thin is easily formed at room temperature and temperature in a continuous process. When the dichroic polarizing material which is mixed is inorganic, the organic compound preferably has crown ether, cryptand, etc., for taking it in a molecule as much as possible in its basic skelton.
