PURPOSE:To provide a unidirectional printing controlling system for a serial printer improved in throughput of printing, by moving a printing head to the first position in the next printing line and performing edition for the second and subsequent characters in the next printing line, after printing in one line is completed. CONSTITUTION:When printing n-many characters per line, a printing head is moved from a printing head position A before printing to a printing-starting position B, characters from a character-1 b1 to a character-n bn are printed, and the head is moved to a printing-ending position C. Printing data are sequentially edited by a one-character amount at a time, and after editing the data for the first character, the printing-starting position B is calculated, and a starting operation for moving the head is conducted. While the head is moved from the position A to the position B, data for the second to n-th characters b2-bn are edited. After edition of data for one line is completed and the head is moved to the printing-starting position B, printing is conducted. Since the edition of the printing data is conducted while moving the head to the printing starting position and the edition is completed during the movement, a period of time required for moving of the head is shortened.
