PURPOSE:To hold down the projection of a water pump toward the outside of an engine so as to compact them, by forming the impeller of the water pump which is provided coaxially with a crankshaft in such a configuration wherein the diameter is gradually enlarged axially from an inlet side to a discharge side. CONSTITUTION:The pump axis 5 of a water pump P is connected to one end of a crankshaft 2, and the pump axis 5 is rotatably supported on a pump case 9 via a bearing 10. An impeller 15 is received in the pump chamber 14 of this pump case 9 in such a manner that its inlet side is directed the side of the crankshaft 2, and is stuck to the axis end of the pump axis 5. And the impeller 15 is formed in such a configuration wherein the diameter is gradually enlarged axially from an inlet side to a discharge side. Accompanying to this, the diameter of the pump case 9 is gradually reduced inwardly, or toward the side of the crankshaft 2. Thus, the water pump P and a clutch C can be disposed lappingly in the radial directions, so that whole the engine can be compacted.
