PURPOSE:To detect a steam leakage accurately, by a method wherein steam is irradiated with laser light, the scattered light is converted to light with two directions of polarization to be taken on the same screen and image information is compared as projected on the right and the left to the center line of the screen. CONSTITUTION:Steam leaked from a pipe is irradiated with laser light and scattered light from the steam and scattered light from a surrounding wall are received with a stereo mirror 6. The stereo mirror 6 is provided with two windows and an analyzer 6a is mounted at one window so as to be parallel with the irradiation laser light while an analyzer 6c is mounted on the other window so as to be vertical thereto. The scattered light from the steam passes through the analyzer 6a alone while a scattered light from a wall passed through both the analyzers 6a and 6c. Then, signals from the analyzers 6a and 6c are sent to a TV camera 7 to form images by the analyzers 6a and 6c in s symmetry on the right and on the left to the center line of a screen of the camera 7. Only the bright point of the scattered light from the steam is projected on one area of screen while the bright point of the scattered light from the steam and that of the scattered light from the wall are projected on the other area of the screen. Therefore, the comparison of right and left image information enables accurate judgement of a steam leakage.
