PURPOSE:To attain the flexible countermeasures with a controller for local area network by executing the protocol selectively in accordance with the contents of a control table where the name of a subject user program, the name of a terminal set at the remote side and the protocol execution area are set as the parameters for transmission and reception of desired data. CONSTITUTION:A local area network controller 100A is set between a host computer 200 which stores a proper number of user programs in a main memory and terminals 500a-500c set at the remote side and containing the protocols of optional levels. The controller 100A contains a program module 104 having a specific protocol executing function, a program module 103A having a prescribed bypass function, and a control table 106. The name of a subject user program, the name of the terminal set at the remote side and the protocol execution area are set to the table 106 as the parameters needed for transfer of desired data. Then the protocol is executed selectively in accordance with the contents of the table 106. Thus it is possible to reduce the overhead owing to the mismatching with the protocol and secure the flexible countermeasure with the controller 100A.
