PURPOSE:To perform three functions, recording, reproducing and erasing, by the same device by constituting the device of two, the first and second heads and switching them to fit to a medium of relatively high density and to fit to a medium of relatively low density. CONSTITUTION:The device is provided with the first head 21 of relatively wide gap length which is at a position preceding the running of a medium 11 on the magnetic recording medium 11 and the second head of relatively narrow gap length that follows the former. For the medium 11 of relatively high recording density, the first head 21 is used as an erasing head, and the second head 22 is used as a recording and reproducing head. For the medium 11 of relatively low recording density, recording and reproducing are made using the first head 21 as a recording and reproducing head, or using the first head 21 as a recording head and the second head 22 as a reproducing head. In this way, the recording, reproducing and erasing of a medium of relatively high recording density and a medium of relatively low recording density can be made by the same device. |
