The holding device (1) for receiving a vehicle licence plate has a frame which can be plugged together and has on one boundary edge (6a) a slot for receiving an edge region of the plate. The frame (1) is of two-part construction and comprises a base plate (2), which is provided with an edge region (6a, 6b, 6c) on three sides and substantially corresponds in dimensions to the size of the plate to be held, and a fixing strip (3) which can be attached to and locked positively with said base plate (2) and forms a fourth edge region (6f). The slot for receiving the edge region of the plate lies in the central edge region (6a) of the base plate (2) opposite the fixing strip (3). In the region of the attached fixing strip (3), the base plate (2) has a projecting edge region (2b) which is overlapped by the inserted fixing strip (3) and is provided with locking elements (19). The base plate (2) has a trough-shaped bottom part (5) which is offset relative to the edge regions (6a, 6b, 6c) and is provided with a plurality of holes and slots (18a - 18g) for receiving fixing screws. <IMAGE>
