Aldehydes are oxidized in an aqueous medium with cupric oxide or hydroxide as oxidizing agent to an alkali metal salt of a carboxylic acid either (a) in the presence of an alkali-metal hydroxide and silver, or another noble metal, or oxide or hydroxide thereof, or (b) in the presence of an alkali-metal carbonate or bicarbonate and a noble metal, or oxide or hydroxide thereof. Silver, gold, mercury, platinum, ruthenium, rhodium, palladium, osmium and iridium are the noble metals and the free acid may be obtained from the salt. Examples describe the preparation of sodium acrylate, sodium diethylacetate, sodium benzoate, sodium hexahydrobenzoate, the sodium salt of pyromucic acid, sodium cinnamate. The process may be continuous by regeneration of the oxidizing agent by oxygen or oxygen-containing gases and a neutral solution promotor such as 1: 4- dioxane may be present in the medium.</p>
