PURPOSE:To make it possible to manufacture at low cost and consequently extend the use application of the cake of chaff, which is used of the chaff as agricultural waste by a method wherein the chaff is caked by the caking ingredient contained in the chaff. CONSTITUTION:Chaff is caked by the caking ingredient, which is eluted in basic solution by heat-treating the chaff in the solution. As the basic solution, caustic soda, caustic potash or the like, which elutes the caking ingredient or the like constituting the tissue of the chaff. The concentration, in case of soda lye, for example, is normally within the range of about 10-30% by volume. The temperature suitable for swelling the chaff is preferably within the range of about 70-100 deg.C. In the basic solution which is heated up the above-mentioned temperature, the same amount as that of the basic solution of the chaff is added so as to swell the chaff. The resultant chaff cake is obtained by caking the chaff itself by the caking ingredient of the chaff.
