The present invention relates to optically-read codes. In accordance with the invention the optically-detectable surfaces constituting the signs of the code are constituted by reflecting surfaces 14, the reflecting material backscattering an incident ray substantially onto itself and for that reason the surface explored is illuminated 3 with incident light rays 16 which are as close as possible to the optical axis 18 of the optical detector 4 in such a way that the said optical axis is in the backscattering cone 17 of the incident light ray.
