PURPOSE:To remove positional deviation at the transfer of an image with a small-sized simple constitution by synchronizing the driving of a photosensitive drum and a transfer drum, the formation of a latent image on the photosensitive drum and the timing of transfer under digital control. CONSTITUTION:The electrostatically charged photosensitive drum 1 is exposed to a laser beam 3 made incident through a polygon mirror 4, an ftheta lens 5, etc., and the 1st electrostatic latent image is formed and developed by an yellow (Y) developing unit 9 at first. At that time, Magenta (M), cyanine (C) and black (B) developing units 10-12 are stopped and are not brought into contact with the drum 1. The Y color toner image formed on the drum 1 is transferred to recording paper 15 wound and fixed around/on the transfer drum 16. Respective color images of M, C and B are successively superposed and transferred to the recording paper 15 by the similar image formation cycles and then fixed by a fixing unit 23. The driving of the drums 1, 16, the formation of latent images on the drum 1 and the transfer of the latent images to the drum 16 are synchronized by counting up pulses from the same pulse source by a timing circuit consisting of a pulse motor, a counter, etc., under digital control.
