The present invention relates to improvements to folding steps for vehicles of the type comprising a carriage 4 mounted sliding on rails 4A in a compartment, a foldable step structure mounted cantilevered on the carriage 4, a motor member 6 for actuating the said carriage in the compartment and motor means for folding and unfolding the structure 5 in a vertical plane when the structure is outside the compartment. The improvements according to the invention are characterised in that the motor member 6 is constituted by a rack-and-pinion assembly 14 and by a device for adjusting the play in the rack-and-pinion assembly and for guiding the carriage 4. <IMAGE>
