PURPOSE:To define more clearly a critical electric field (Ec) in accordance with the kind of electrostatic charge accumulated on a floating electrode by forming the floating electrode surrounded by a dielectric substance on the inside of one or both electrodes. CONSTITUTION:A pair of translucent boards 4, 4' are formed and a pair of translucent electrodes 3, 3' are arranged on the insides of the boards 4, 4'. The 1st dielectric thin film 1 and the floating electrode 6 are formed on the electrode 3 to constitute a capacitor. The 2nd dielectric film 2 is formed so as to cover the electrode 6. The other capacitor consisting of the dielectric film 2 and liquid crystal 5 is connected between the electrode 6 and the other electrode 3'. A liquid crystal orientation film 7 is arranged on the electrode 3' side having no formation of the electrode 6 so as to be turned to the liquid crystal 1 existing side. In addition, a silicon nitride film 11 is formed on the electrode 3' to prevent the liquid crystal from being mixed with impurity such as sodium. Thus, the pure Ec can be practically obtained.
