The invention relates to a device for the instantaneous production of steam for use with foodstuffs. According to the invention, the device is of the type consisting of a water reserve 19, of a mass of an absorbent material 18 supplied with water by ascending capillary action from the said reserve placed in a lower position, and of an electric heat source, and is characterised in that the absorbent material 18 is connected, by way of two opposite ends, to the terminals of an electric power supply, the said material, in its water-impregnated state, constituting, with the water with which it is associated, a medium which is both conductive and resistant, thus constituting a source of heat which is generated within the absorbed liquid medium and which is instantaneously vaporised.
