NEW MATERIAL:A terpene compound shown by formula (X, Y and Z are hydroxyl, acetoxy or H and at least two of X, Y and Z are hydroxyl group or acetoxy group). USE:Showing improved activity suppressing action on Gram-positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus or Bacillus subtilis and useful as an antibacterial agent aganist these bacteria. PREPARATION:For example, a certain sponge (Hippospongia sp. of the family Spongiidae of the order Dictyoceratida) is ground, homogenized, extracted with a proper solvent and purified by column chromatography to give a compound wherein X and Y in the formula I are hydroxyl group and Z is H and a compound wherein X, Y and Z are hydroxyl group.
