NEW MATERIAL:6-Anilino-2,3-dihydro-5,8-dihydroxynaphthalene-1,4-dio-ne expressed by the formula. USE:A dye, pigment and an intermediate therefor capable of dyeing wool, hair, etc., to dark brown color, etc. PREPARATION:2-Anilino-5,8-dihydroxynaphthoquinone is reduced with a reducing agent, e.g. sodium dithionate, etc., in the presence of an alkali, e.g. KOH, NaOH or Na2CO3, etc., in water, alcohol or mixture solution of water and alcohol or in the presence of zinc in an aqueous solution of hydrochloric acid to afford the aimed compound expressed by the formula. The reaction condition is preferably at room temperature - refluxing temperature for 1-5hr under anaerobic condition to carry out the reaction.
