An apparatus for covering water surfaces of, for example, swimming pools exhibits a covering element which essentially consists of sheet material in one or more layers. Selected regions, in particular the front border region of the covering element, are designed with a flexurally rigid shaped part which has a relatively high degree of buoyancy with respect to the sheet material. This results in the possibility of using the sheet coverings, which are cost-effective per se, not only when the winding device is located above the water, but also when said device is located below the water, because the shaped parts permit a sufficiently high degree of buoyancy and good guidance capacity of the covering element. The front edge of the covering element is expediently configured such that, when it reaches the water surface, it is automatically deflected into the desired covering direction.
