The invention relates to a lock (retaining) washer with a base part (1) and two spaced legs (3, 3) in a plane parallel to the base part (1). This plane is at a distance from the plane of the base part (1), the legs (3, 3) being connected to the base part (1) via at least one web part (4) and having mutually opposite inner edges which can grip the circumference of a bolt, a shaft or the like on expansion of the legs (3, 3). The base part (1) has the form of a ring, the internal opening (2) of which has a diameter which is greater than the diameter of the bolt or the like. The inner edges of the legs (3, 3) are furthermore designed so that they can engage in a circumferential groove (11) on the bolt or the like. A lock washer of this kind can be placed on the bolt or the like at some point along the latter. <IMAGE>
