A process for producing a polyphenylene ether comprises oxidatively coupling at least one monohydric phenol in a polymerization reactor in the presence of a complex catalyst comprising a copper salt and an amine in a liquid medium immiscible with water and allowing the resulting polyphenylene ether to precipitate and form a slurry in said medium, washing said slurry with an aqueous solution comprising water and a chelating agent to remove the catalyst and separating the aqueous solution from said slurry.
