The invention relates to a method and the devices which are required to carry it out in order to achieve safe vertical landing of fixed-wing aircraft which are not equipped with VTOL devices or whose present flying characteristics are limited, and to externally assisted takeoff, without any takeoff run, of fixed-wing aircraft. A fixed-wing aircraft which is provided with lower retaining means is coupled in flight to the rotary-wing aircraft with the aid of upper retaining means, which are supported by a rotary-wing aircraft above the fixed-wing aircraft. The rotary-wing aircraft produces the forward thrust and lift force required for transportation of the fixed-wing aircraft and lowers it vertically. Takeoff without a takeoff run is initiated by the rotary-wing aircraft lifting the fixed-wing aircraft and accelerating it in its direction of flight. When the altitude, airspeed and the fixed-wing aircraft's own thrust are sufficient, said fixed-wing aircraft releases the connection to the upper retaining means of the rotary-wing aircraft and flies autonomously. <IMAGE>
