PURPOSE:To prevent an increase in the temperature of a printing head to a prearranged level by storing printing data of a next line in a printing memory while printing data of a single line is in printing process and making variable the division of printing data in accordance with an identified printing duty. CONSTITUTION:A printing memory 59 stores printing data DATA i of a next line to be processed next and sends it to a register 71 and a printing data converter 74. A counter 72 counts bits which continuously fire printing pins within the range of more than a single character representing a dot count of printing data held after parallel/series conversion by the register 71. A count value is transmitted to a 50% comparator 73a and a 80% comparator 73b. Then a duty is arithmetically operated and compared based on the count value and is sent to the printing data converter 74. When it is received from the 50% comparator 73a, printing data is halved and set to a driver 60. After this, it is printed at 1/2 processing speed. Consequently, an average printing duty of a printing head 61 which performs printing process can always be held below a prearranged level and an increase in temperature of the printing head 61 be prevented.
