PURPOSE:To enable an ink ribbon to be used multiple times, by heating a used part of the ink ribbon, thereby leveling a rugged surface of an ink layer of the ribbon. CONSTITUTION:An ink ribbon 8 used for printing is supplied with a quantity of heat for softening an ink layer 22 by a heater 13, and is drawn upward by a ribbon drawing- out roller 9 while being clamped between a ribbon sliding guides 11, 17 and making sliding contact with the latter. In this case, the part of the ribbon 8 being drawn upward makes sliding contact with the part of the ribbon 8 being returned while facing the former part after being reversed, whereby recessed parts and projected parts of the ink layer 22 are leveled through mutual filling or shaving, and the ink ribbon 8 with the ink layer 22 thus leveled in discharged upward on the left side. The discharged ink ribbon 8 is reversed by the roller 9, is then fed downward on the right side while making sliding contact with the guide 17, is reheated by a heater 14, and is again brought into sliding contact with the part of the ink ribbon 8 being newly introduced upward on the left side immediately after recording, whereby the rugged surface of the ink layer 22 is further leveled. The ink ribbon 8 with the ink layer 22 thus leveled is discharged downward on the right side, and is taken up around a take-up roll 7.
