PURPOSE:To prevent color misregistration from being caused by an error of a returning position for a recording paper, by applying to the recording paper a high back tension including a pulling force exerted by a taking-up force for an ink sheet. CONSTITUTION:A recording paper 11 paid out from a recording paper cassette 1 is fed in the state of being overlain by an ink sheet 10, and an image in the first color is thermally transferred to the paper 11 by driving a thermal head 3. When the thermal transfer in the first color is finished, the paper 11 is fed in a direction opposite to the paying-out direction by reversely rotating a platen 2, and is returned to a starting position of the transfer in the first color. At this time, a torque Te1 controlled by a first back-tensioning mechanism 21 is applied to a pinch roller 4 pressing the paper 11, and a back tension Fb= Te1/r is applied to the paper 11 being returned. Therefore, by reversely feeding the paper 11 by the same feed quantity as that in paying out the paper, the paper 11 can be accurately returned to the starting position of the transfer in the first color.
