PURPOSE:To realize a liquid crystal light valve which can made gradation display having no hues and black and white display and to obtain a projection displays device using the liquid crystals light valve common to R, G and B by incorporating a dichromatic dye into a twisted nematic liquid crystal. CONSTITUTION:Black and white switching having no hue is made possible by making the dischromatic dye compatible with the twisted nematic liquid crystal. Incident light from a halogen lamp 1 is collimated by a lens 2 and the collimated light is separated to R, G and B components by a dichroic prism 3. The separated components are made incident on the twisted nematic light valves 6-8 for R, G and B via a mirror 4 and are again made incident on the dichroic prism 5 from which the synthesized light is emitted. The light is macro-projected on a screen 10 by a projection lens 9 and a color image is obtd. The resulted projection image has the excellent color purity and gradation display. Since the light valves for R, G and B have the same optical characteristics, the easy color reproduction is made possible without correcting the impressed voltages for each of R, G and B.
