PURPOSE:To execute the character recognition at high speed by referring it to the distance data of a candidate character arranged while adjoining to a dictionary for recognition and executing the character recognition. CONSTITUTION:The character data of a recognizing object are inputted to a feature extracting circuit 1 and the feature value is extracted. The distance with a candidate character registered to a dictionary 2 for recognition is calculated by a calculating circuit 3 and the candidate character of the minimum distance is outputted as the recognizing result by a comparator circuit 4. The calculating circuit 3 refers to the distance data of the candidate character arranged while adjoining to the dictionary 2 for the recognition and executes the character recognition. To the dictionary 2 for the recognition, the distance with a pre-candidate character in the sequence of the index arranged at the dictionary is calculated and registered beforehand.
