PURPOSE:To require no management for a defective sector by providing an exclusively used sector on a recording medium in order to substitute the contents of the defective sector detected during a recording and recording information representing the defective sector in addition to the recorded contents of the defective sector when recording on a substitute sector. CONSTITUTION:A recording and reproducing means 41 is positioned on the Nth track by a positioning means 44 and sector information of a #3 sector is read. When the sector information of the #3 sector cannot be recognized by any abnormality, after the completion of the recording, the inspection is performed by an inspection means 47 and when it is decided that the recording is not correctly performed by any abnormality, the contents of the #3 defective sector are written in the exclusively used sector 102 for substitution by using the recording the reproducing means 41. At this time, ID information such as a sector number, a track number is added to the data stored in a memory means by the inspection means 47, and thereafter written in the recording medium 100.
