Prior to each ignition investigation of the gas phase above the fluid sample at test temp., it is determined whether the atmosphere in the gas phase has been saturated with combustible gases and/or vapours from the fluid sample. An appts. (11) for stepped heating of the fluid test sample under accurate temp. control from the gas phase above the liq. surface is connected to an instrument (2) for measurement of the content of combustible gas and/or vapour in the air. This instrument is, in turn, connected to the gas phase. In connecting conduits a pump (3) is connected so that the gas sample from the analysis instrument, activated at constant flow via an ignition chamber (4), can be returned to the gas phase above the fluid sample, provided ignition does not occur.
