NOVEL ESTER-TYPE LIQUID CRYSTAL COMPOUND

NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula I (R is 1-20C alkyl or alkoxy; Q* is optically active alkyl). EXAMPLE:4-[(S)-2-methylbutyloxycarbonyl]phenyl 4-(4-decyloxybenzoyloxy) benzoate. USE:Useful as a liquid crystal composition. The compound is easily producible on an industrial scale. It is colorless in itself and has excellent chemical stability to water and light. The liquid crystal compound consisting of the present compound exhibits melting point depression, expands the temperature range of SC* phase and is utilizable at room temperature. Furthermore, the compound has high rate of response and excellent memory property and is extremely useful as an optical switching element for display. PREPARATION:The compound of formula I can be produced e.g. by reacting the acid chloride of formula II with a phenol derivative of formula III in the presence of basic substance, reacting the reaction product with a chlorination agent and further reacting with an optically active alcohol of formula Q*OH.
