PURPOSE:To improve torque in the maximum revolution area while increase the durability of a solenoid valve by controlling so as to increase the valve overlap of a suction and exhaust valve in less than a defined high revolution area while in a defined high load area. CONSTITUTION:A valve timing variable mechanism 20 makes a cam shaft relatively rotate with respect to a pulley by displacing an intermediate gear 4 in the axial direction by means of hydraulic pressure which is regulated via a solenoid valve 13, thereby, making the relative phase of the valve opening timing of a suction and exhaust valve variable. The output signals of an engine speed detecting means 21 and an engine load detecting means 22 are inputted into an operating condition judging means 23. And, when an engine is judged below a defined high revolution while in a defined high load area by the judging means 23, the solenoid valve 13 is controlled so as to increase the a valve overlap via a driving means 24.
