The invention relates to an external rear view mirror for a vehicle, comprising a base part 20 attached to the wall of the vehicle, a casing 2 housing a mirror, and an intermediate component 8 interposed between the base part 20 and the casing 2, the intermediate component 8 being capable of moving with respect to the base part 20 about at least two mutually perpendicular axes 13, 40 and the casing 2 being capable of moving with respect to the intermediate component 8 about an axis which is substantially coincident with one 40 of these perpendicular axes along notched surfaces 7, 17, the casing 2, the intermediate component 8 and the base part 20 being pushed elastically against one another by assembly means. According to the invention, the interaction surfaces 10, 22 between the intermediate component 8 and the base part 20 are spherical, the intermediate component additionally comprising a hollow cylinder 9 which receives a cylindrical cup-shaped component 4 securely fastened to the casing 2, and the aforementioned assembly means comprise a substantially flat connecting rod 30.
