PURPOSE:To ensure easy and accurate detection of conveying conditions such as snaking and the like without affecting a sheet material by detecting conveying conditions based on respective conveying speeds of the sheet material detected by both No.1 and No.2 speed detecting means arranged at both sides of the sheet material. CONSTITUTION:As respective rotary encoders 54a and 54b strike respective rollers 58a and 58b into contact with an image recording carrier 18, respective rotary encoders 54a and 54b can pick up respective conveying speeds VL and VR at both sides of the image recording carrier 18 by means of the rotation of respective rollers 58a and 58b. Accordingly, conveying speed VL is compared with conveying speed VR for finding which is greater, whereby it can be detected whether the image recording carrier 18 is snaking or not. That is, in case of VL<VR, the image recording carrier is found to be conveyed without any snaking. And in case of VL=VR, the image recording carrier 18 is found to be snaking. And when the snaking and the like of the image recording carrier is detected, pinch rollers 52a and 52b and the like shall be replaced. And if anything abnormal is found, the revolving speed of drums shall be controlled.
