SELECTIVE CHLORINATION FOR IRON CONTENT IN TITANIUM-CONTAINING ORE

A process for removing iron values from titaniferous ores is disclosed, comprising contacting ore with a reducing atmosphere at elevated temperatures; continuously cycling a part of the partially reduced ore to a chlorinating zone where it is partially chlorinated in an atmosphere substantially free of carbon and then recycled to the reducing zone; withdrawing the resulting TiO2 beneficiate and FeCl3 vapor from the chlorinating zone; oxidizing the FeCl3 vapor to produce Cl2 gas and a Fe2O3 waste stream; and recycling the Cl2 gas to the chlorinating zone.
