PURPOSE:To suppress damage and welding of carbon fiber and to obtain the titled fiber having little fluffing, by applying an aqueous emulsion of a heat- resistant lubricant to the fiber prior to infusibilization. CONSTITUTION:Pitch fibers produced by melt-spinning of carbonaceous pitch are doubled, coated with an aqueous emulsion of a heat-resistant lubricant and infusibilized in an oxidizing atmosphere. The breakage of the fiber bundle during infusibilization can be prevented, the rate of production can be increased and a fiber having little fluffing can be produced by continuously passing the fiber bundle in linear form through an infusiblization furnace. After infusibilization, the fiber is subjected to primary heat-treatment in a non- oxidizing gas atmosphere at <=1,800 deg.C and secondary heat-treatment in an inert gas atmosphere at <=3000 deg.C to obtain a carbon fiber or graphite fiber having high tenacity and elastic modulus. |
