PURPOSE:To remove carbon from a metal hydride alloy and to obtain a metal hydride giving high-purity hydrogen, by occluding hydrogen in a metal hydride alloy and reducing the pressure under heating. CONSTITUTION:An alloy for forming a metal hydride capable of reversibly occluding and releasing hydrogen, such as alloy of rare earth metal, Ti, etc., is heat-treated to improve the uniformity of the alloy phase and hydrogen is occluded in the alloy. The hydrogen-occluded alloy is depressurized under heating to effect the removal of hydrogen. Carbon component in the alloy is reacted with hydrogen to form methane, which is removed from the alloy by degasification treatment. Accordingly, formation of methane can be suppressed and hydrogen having improved purity can be produced by purifying hydrogen gas using the alloy obtained by the above process. |
