PURPOSE:To obtain a separation membrane having a desired void size without interposing an intermediate layer, by filling the pores of a porous substrate with carbonaceous particles having a size smaller than that of said pores and subsequently laminating a separation membrane comprising particles having a size smaller than that of said pores to said substrate before burning off said carbonaceous particles. CONSTITUTION:A porous body having a pore size of 5-30mum and a void ratio of 20-60% is impregnated with a slip having carbonaceous particles with a particle size of about 0.5-3mum suspended therein. The concn. of the carbonaceous particles is set to about 20-40wt%. This impregnation operation is repeated plural times if necessary. Subsequently, the porous body is dipped in a slip of a ceramic or metal powder with a particle size of 0.02-3mum. The concon. of the powder is set to 10-25wt% and, if necessary, a peptizing agent and an org. binder etc., are added to said slip and the film thickness on the porous body is set to 5-50mum. Next, the porous body is heated to temp. up to 800 deg.C under an oxidative atmosphere to gasify and burn off the carbonaceous particles. By this method, a separation membrane having a desired void size can be produced without interposing an intermediate layer.
