PURPOSE:To keep the activity of a chromium oxide catalyst at a high level and to carry out the reaction of hydrogen chloride with oxygen in the presence of the above catalyst to form chlorine on an industrial scale without causing problems of corrosion, by restricting iron content in the material of reactor. CONSTITUTION:Chlorine is produced by reacting hydrogen chloride with oxygen in the presence of chromium oxide catalyst. In the above reaction, a material containing <=1wt% iron is used as the material for the reactor. Although ceramic materials such as glass may be used as the material for the reactor, it is preverable to use a metallic material preferably Ni steel, Ti steel, etc., taking strength of the reactor into consideration. It is necessary that the iron content of the metal is <=1wt%. The lowering of the catalytic activity can be prevented and the reaction can be carried out on an industrial scale without problem of corrosion by the use of a reactor made of the above material. |
