PURPOSE:To obtain a solid-state image pickup device having high density and requiring no high-degree fine working and no drive at high frequency by each transferring charges alternately transferred to one vertical transfer path from a plurality of vertical transfer paths by a horizontal transfer path. CONSTITUTION:Charges being transferred by three CCDs 1-3 for vertical transfer are transferred to one CCDs 4 for vertical transfer in succession, staggering the time, and transferred horizontally by three CCDs 5-7 for horizontal transfer. Consequently, since charges being transferred by the three CCDs 1-3 for vertical transfer are divided into the three CCDs 5-7 for horizontal transfer and transferred, transfer electrodes for the CCD for horizontal transfer can be made smaller than a device conducting horizontal transfer by one CCD for horizontal transfer. A fine working technique is not required for manufacturing the CCDs for horizontal transfer, and an image pickup device is manufactured easily even when picture elements for the image pickup device are increased and density thereof is augmented. |
